Your deposit doesn't come back on its own.
Getting your security deposit back means doing a few specific things, on time, in writing — or your landlord might end up keeping your money. We handle those steps, mail the letters, and watch every deadline. We've got you.
Your deposit is probably the biggest check you've ever handed a stranger. Protecting it costs $59.99. Fixing it after costs $79.99.
What we do
Three jobs. We do all of them.
01
Your must-dos, done.
Getting your deposit back requires certain things to happen — like the forwarding-address letter, sent the right way at the right time. Miss them, and your landlord might get to keep your money. We take care of each one and keep you compliant with your state's requirements, so you're set up to get paid back.
02
Their deadlines, watched.
Landlords have deadlines too — and in many states there are real penalties on them for missing one. Most renters never notice. We watch every clock, and if your landlord slips, we let you know money could be coming your way and prep what you need to pursue it.
03
Withholding? Held to the rules.
A landlord can't just decide to keep your deposit. To hold any of it, your state requires specific things from them — itemized statements, documentation, deadlines. We check that every requirement was actually met, and when it wasn't, we get the right letter out.
What makes us different
Other services generate a letter. We actually send it.
The demand letter only works if it's certified-mailed, delivery-proven, and followed up on. Everyone else hands you a PDF and wishes you luck. We put it in the mail and track what comes back.
No visits to the post office. Ever.

How it works
You answer questions. We do the errands.
Five minutes of questions, and the machine takes over — every required step scheduled, every letter mailed and tracked, every deadline on watch, on both sides.
01
Tell us about your move
Five minutes of questions — and your lease, if you have it handy. We figure out exactly what your state requires and build your timeline.
02
We mail what matters
The letters that help protect your deposit go out by certified mail, in your name, with your approval. Tracking numbers and delivery timestamps land in your file automatically.
03
We watch every clock
Yours and theirs. You get an alert before anything expires — and when your landlord misses a deadline, your next step is already prepared.
Your case view
Example timeline. Your deadlines depend on your state and your situation — that's exactly what we track.
Why we exist
Renters don't lose deposits because they're wrong.
They lose them because the process is designed to be annoying: unfamiliar rules, precise deadlines, letters that have to be sent a specific way, follow-ups nobody remembers. Most people have better things to do — and some landlords count on exactly that. We built MoveOutMoney so "better things to do" stops costing renters their money.
Coverage
Built state by state. All 50 + D.C.
Deposit rules change at the state line — deadlines, required letters, what a landlord must do to withhold, even who the clock runs on. Wherever you rent, we run the playbook for your state.
Fair questions
What do I actually get?+
A guided case, start to finish. We figure out what your state requires, handle each required step, and physically mail the letters — certified, tracked, in your name, with your approval. Your deadlines (and your landlord's) are monitored the whole way, and if things escalate, your documents and evidence are already organized and ready to use.
What's the difference between Shield and Rescue?+
Timing. Move-Out Shield is for before you move out — it sets everything up so the process goes right from day one, which is the strongest position you can be in. Deposit Rescue is for when your deposit already isn't coming back — it checks whether your landlord did what your state requires to hold your money, and gets the right letters out fast.
Why does certified mail matter so much?+
Because deadlines only help you if you can prove when things were sent and received. Certified mail creates that proof. We send your letters certified with electronic delivery confirmation, and the receipts are saved to your case file automatically.
Could I really end up with more than my deposit?+
It happens. Many states put penalties on landlords who miss deadlines or withhold without following the rules — in some states, that can mean you may be entitled to pursue more than the original deposit. Whether it applies to you depends on your state and your situation. We track it, tell you when it's in play, and prepare what you'd need. What we never do is promise an outcome.
Which states do you support?+
All 50 states and Washington, D.C. Deposit rules are genuinely different in each one, so once you're in, everything you see is specific to your state — your deadlines, your required steps, your landlord's obligations.
Do I ever have to go to the post office?+
No. That's kind of the whole point.
Ready when you are.
